The characters Balder and Gaia find themselves in a dizzying void between two worlds, our reality and the spirit world. They have sought us out to attract attention. They want to confront our soulless time – to be able to cross over to the other side.
PotatoPotatos new performance Spirit World Rising wants to create perspectives on contemporary esotericism and the increased interest in the occult. In dark times characterized by uncertainty, more and more young people are devoting themselves to spiritual practices such as tarot, astrology, séances and magical rituals. Not least, WitchTok has become a hugely popular virtual place for this counterculture. Artists who used spiritual practices during the turn of the 20th century are noticed in a completely new way today, perhaps we are currently experiencing a new occult turn of the century! But what does this increased interest tell us about our times?
Through esoteric practices such as ritual magic, séances, instant writing, spells and Electronic Voice Phenomenon, the project’s participants investigate contemporary mysticism.
