Casino is presented at KONTRÄR as a part of Swedstage – The Swedish Showcase for Performing Arts

Three performers of the Latin American diaspora: Jao Moon, Nina Sandino and Ofelia Jarl Ortega, move through a fictional dance floor, where rhythm emerges through their steps. Drawing on personal histories and diasporic memory, the performers connect and disconnect in subtle, playful exchanges. Casino – as salsa dancing is called in Cuba – reflects on salsa as both dance and cultural projection. The work unpacks identity, clichés and longing, through a dance that resonates beyond its origins.

Ofelia Jarl Ortegais a Chilean-Swedish choreographer and performer based in Stockholm. You last saw her on Konträr’s stage just a few weeks ago together with Sibille Attar.

Trying to come together through salsa is hard and painful when you cannot: there’s no music, we’re three dancers instead of a couple, with different dance backgrounds, moving through an improvised score on how to be together that’s inherently doomed to fail – for 45 minutes.
