An authoritarian society in the near future, where the president’s laws grow harsher and more numerous by the week. In the city, people dress in grey clothing that conforms to the regime’s mandates. Standing out is forbidden, as are loud laughter, heated conversations, holding hands, gathering in large groups, the serving of alcohol, high heels, and any general expression of opposition to the regime. Police prowl Östgötagatan; you might be stopped to have your heels measured—anything over 3 cm incurs a fine, while anything over 10 cm results in at least a night behind bars. Shop windows are adorned with boards displaying regulations, photographs of the president’s family, and black-and-white broadcasts of presidential speeches.
